Al Gharafa was formed in 1979, after local residents decided to create a sports club to serve the local youth population in the area. Al Etihad Club was established on the 6th of June 1979 and officially recognized as a sporting institution in Qatar. The first Club president was Sheikh Khalifa bin Fahad bin Mohamed Al Thani for one year between 1979 and 1980.
Over the years Al Gharafa have had a host of influential presidents to guide the club; H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Jassim Al Thani, H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, H.E. Sheikh Jassim bin Thamer Al Thani, and H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani,.
Al Gharafa residents could never have imagined that their Club would have reached such prestigious status in the Qatari sports and to achieve such accomplishments and to introduce such number of sports leaders. The name El Etihad was chosen for the club to resemble the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity. Although this was changed to Al Gharafa in 2004 to represent the local area.
Al Gharafa has won a host of titles in Qatari football. They have claimed the QSL title on seven occasions, the last time being in 2010. The Cheetahs have also lifted the Emir Cup on seven occasions, most recently in 2012. Gharafa have also won three Heir Apparent Cup (currently Qatar Cup), Two Sheikh Jassem Cup titles and one Qatar Stars Cup.
Head Coach Pedro Caxinia is considered one of the most distinguished coaches in the league and succeeded the Brazilian coach Pericles Chamusca.
Caxinia has enjoyed plenty of coaching experience football coaching career as he started as assistant coach in 1999 until he became head coach in 2010. His first experience was with Uniao Desportiva de Leiria Club in Portugal for one season. He also worked with the Portuguese Clube Desportivo Nacional for one year.
In 2003 he became the Head Coach of the Mexican side Santos followed by the other Mexican Club Laguna to win with them the league and the cup titles. He also was the assistant coach of Al Hilal Club of KSA with Jose Pesiro and the assistant coach of Saudi Arabia National Team.
