Al Gharafa was formed in 1979, after local residents decided to create a sports club to serve the local youth population in the area. Al Etihad Club was established on the 6th of June 1979 and officially recognized as a sporting institution in Qatar. The first Club president was Sheikh Khalifa bin Fahad bin Mohamed Al Thani for one year between 1979 and 1980.

Over the years Al Gharafa have had a host of influential presidents to guide the club; H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Jassim Al Thani, H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, H.E. Sheikh Jassim bin Thamer Al Thani, and H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani,.

Al Gharafa residents could never have imagined that their Club would have reached such prestigious status in the Qatari sports and to achieve such accomplishments and to introduce such number of sports leaders. The name El Etihad was chosen for the club to resemble the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity. Although this was changed to Al Gharafa in 2004 to represent the local area.
