Al Kharaitiyat and Al Gharafa win, Al Sailiya hold Qatar SC
Three matches were played on a busy Sunday night in the second round of QSL Cup Group A, with Al Khor vs Al Kharaitiyat, Qatar vs Al Sailiya and Al Duhail vs Al Gharafa all in action. There will be a further two matches in Group B scheduled for Monday. The last fixture of the round will be held on Wednesday, between Al Sadd and Al Rayyan at the Al Khor Stadium.
The following are the highlights of Group A fixtures:
Al Khor vs Al Kharaitiyat 2-4
Al Kharaitiyat continued their winning ways as they achieved their second consecutive win, overcoming Al Khor 4-2, at the Al Gharafa Stadium. A highly-charged encounter saw the sides battle throughout the match that ended in an away victory for The Thunders and the suspension of Al Khor’s Madisson.
Al Kharaitiyat took the lead in the first half, thanks to a headed goal by defender Maui, before Rachid Tiberkenin superbly doubled it in the 61st minute. Ten minutes later, Madisson was able to pull one back for Al Khor which gave them the impetus to seek another.
Rachid Tiberkenin grabbed his second goal of the night, and third for Al Kharaitiyat, as his solo run followed by a shot was saved by Al Khor’s Claude Amin, but the former neatly followed up on the rebound.
Al Khor did not despair despite the third goal and continued to attack aggressively. They were rewarded in the 81st minute following a good pass by Madisson to Saoud Al Khalaqi, who was on hand to grab their second goal. Just as they looked to be back in the game, they were reduced to 10 men as Madisson was adjudged to have dived in the penalty area and handed a second yellow card. Al Kharaitiyat took advantage of it and wrapped up victory from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.
QSC vs Al Sailiya 3-3
A thrilling encounter at the Al Wakrah Stadium saw two highly-energised sides share the spoils in a six-goal thriller.
Mohamed Mudather and Taimur Abdelkhaleq (two goals) scored for Al Sailiya in the 21st, 52nd and 72nd minute respectively. For Qatar SC, Mohamed Tayeb (13th), Fahad Khalfan (15th) and Youssef Al Kubaisi(74th minute) were on target.
Qatar SC took the lead either side of Al Sailiya’s equaliser in the first half.
Al Sailiya were in good form and had many chances to equalise before they scored two goals in quick succession in the second session. However, The Peregrines could not sustain the momentum and the rivals took advantage of it to force a draw.
QSC now have four points from their first two games, while Al Sailiya managed to open their account, having lost to Al Kharaitiyat in the previous round.
Al Duhail vs Al Gharafa 0-1
Al Gharafa earned a valuable victory over Al Duhail at the Al Khor Stadium. Muayad Hassan netted the all-important goal in the 36th minute. After surging ahead, The Cheetahs went on the back foot and relied mainly on counter-attacks.
Al Gharafa started slowly, but applied pressure steadily and their goal came via a clever pass by Jimenez from the centre of the field. His probing pass reached Hassan who found himself isolated with just the goalkeeper to beat.
While both sides had chances in the second half, it was largely Al Duhail who will be disappointed as their efforts on goal were frequently saved by in-form Al Gharafa goalkeeper Qassim Burhan. The Red Knights kept pushing for goals, in vain though, as Al Gharafa held firm.
The result left Al Gharafa on maximum points from two games, while Al Duhail have yet to collect a point. Duhail may feel aggrieved with the result as it was some fine goalkeeping by Qassim Burhan that thwarted them on many occasions.
