QNB Stars League — Week 20 Highlights

Al Duhail emerging as the 2017-18 season QNB Stars League champions was the biggest highlight of Week 20 action.

The Red Knights’ 5-0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat was the highest-scoring match of the week, that saw 19 goals being scored compared to 30 in the previous round. Not a single position changed in the standings.

Al Duhail made their crowning in style by defeating Al Kharaitiyat 5-0, with Mohammed Moosa, Ismail Mohammed, Yousef El Arabi and Youssef Msakni (two goals) scoring.

With the victory, they took their points tally to 54, eight ahead of second-placed Al Sadd, with two rounds of matches remaining. Al Duhail took an unassailable lead after The Wolves lost 1-2 to Umm Salal.

Al Sadd lost from a winning position. They took the lead through Hassan Ahmed, but suffered the ignominy of conceding an own goal by Boualem Khoukhi. Syrian striker Mahmoud Mawas netted Umm Salal’s winner.

Al Arabi made it a hat-trick of wins by getting the better of Al Rayyan 3-1 in the marquee clash fought between the two teams with the most passionate and loyal fans in Qatar.

Brazilian medio Diego Jardel shone among the Al Arabi ranks by scoring two goals (54th and 90+3) and providing assist for the other scored by Kwame Karikari.

Al Rayyan’s only goal was scored by Moroccan striker Abderrazaq Hamdallah, who remained third in the list of top scorers with 17 goals.

The win enabled Al Arabi to make up for their 2-4 loss to Al Rayyan in the first phase. The Dream Team thus moved away from the danger zone.

Al Gharafa stayed fourth with an easy 3-0 victory over Al Sailiya. Dutch attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder did the star turn for The Cheetahs as he scored twice and set the stage for Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi for the other goal.

Al Gharafa now have 32 points, but they face a stiff challenge from Umm Salal for the fourth spot and thereby earn qualification for the Qatar Cup. The Orange Fortress are breathing down their neck with just one point behind. Al Sailiya stayed on 25.

Qatar SC too made it big by blanking Al Khor 2-0, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Gallo and Syrian forward Osama Omari find the target.

Al Markhiya defeated Al Ahli, also by a 2-0 margin. Leonardo de Souza and Mohammed El Neel were the scorers.

However, The Oryxes remained at the bottom with 12 points.
