QNB Stars League Match Report — Al Kharaitiyat 1 Al Arabi 1

Mohy late strike breaks Al Arabi hearts

Gounerou Mohy’s dramatic, late equaliser secured Al Kharaitiyat a much-deserved point against Al Arabi in Round 7 of the QNB Stars League as they played out a 1-1 draw at the Al Khor Stadium on Saturday night.

Al Arabi will be desperately disappointed to have let the victory slip having seen their conservative approach to the match nearly reap the rewards.

In an eventful first half, it was the hosts who had the upper hand, creating some exceptional chances that they were unable to convert, with Rachid Tiberkanine being at the heart of much of them.

His first chance came as he met a chipped pass and from close range was denied by an excellent stop from the The Dream Team’s goalkeeper Muhammad Naim. The hosts thought they had the opener as Tiberkanine this time found himself through on goal and, after rounding the goalkeeper, somehow missed the target from close.

The second period of play was very much the same, with the hosts creating the lion’s share of opportunities and Al Arabi happy to sit back and wait for their chance to come. That chance did arrive against the run of play in the 79th as Hamad Ismail’s cross from the right was beautifully steered into the far corner by Mardik Mardikian with a header.

Deep into injury time, Mardikian had a chance to seal the points, but his shot with just the keeper to beat went wide and this was to prove costly.

Al Kharaitiyat immediately responded with an attack that saw Tiberkanine feed the ball to Mohy inside the area and his powerful shot was deflected past the keeper to secure a last-gasp draw.

Arabi will have to put their disappointment to one side as they next face a tricky match at home to Al Rayyan, with Al Kharaitiyat travelling to league leaders Al Duhail.
