QNB Stars League Match Report — Al Sailiya 3 Umm Salal 2

Ribeiro brace floors Orange Fortress

Al Sailiya recovered to secure a late 3-2 victory over 10-man Umm Salal, thanks to a double from Wagner Ribeiro at the Al Ahli Stadium on Saturday.

The game started cautiously and it was not until the 36th minute that the deadlock was broken by Al Sailiya playmaker Al Ali whose spectacular shot from a tight angle found its way into the corner of the net.

Umm Salal had been slow to get going, but turned things around very quickly in the second half, thanks to a towering header from Youcef Sekour as he rose to meet an outswinging corner. Minutes later, Al Sailiya were architects of their own downfall as goalkeeper Abdraman Aziz’s deflected clearance fell to Mahmoud Al Mawas, who skipped past a couple of opposition players before converting to give Umm Salal a 2-1 lead.

The response eventually came from the home team as they started to increase the intensity, but were denied on many occasions by Umm Salal keeper Basel Zaidan. Their luck changed, however, on 79 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after captain Juad Ahnash handled in the area. Wagner stepped up, but saw his shot saved, only to be on hand to convert the rebound and bring the scores level.

From here on, there were a stream of attacks from the home side and they finally made it count in the 87th as Wagner’s long-range effort took a wicked deflection and into the top corner. Any hopes of a late equaliser were dashed as substitute Mahir Issa was sent off having caught Al Abidi with his studs.

This victory now creates a bit of daylight in the league between the two sides and Umm Salal will be keen to get back to business in the next round when they face Al Sadd away. Al Sailiya will travel to Al Gharafa.
