QNB Stars League Round 8 Match Report — Al Markhiya 0 Al Ahli 1

Meshaal again to Brigadiers’ rescue

Al Ahli sealed full points from their QNB Stars League Round 8 game by overcoming a resolute Al Markhiya at the Al Arabi Stadium on Saturday. It was captain Meshaal Abdulla who made the difference midway through the second half.

The first half was a quiet affair, with the teams anxious to maintain a clean sheet and not allowing their adversaries to get on top. It was Al Markhiya who were first to create a chance in the eighth minute as Ghanaian striker Kwame Karikari, returning from international duty, muscled his way through the Al Ahli defence before seeing his shot fly wide.

Remarkably, Al Ahli were unable to break the deadlock midway through the first half following a regulation chance. Yasin Chikhaoui had done all the hard work down the right before playing a beautiful pass across the face of the goal. However, Cristian Nazareth’s shot from two yards out somehow went behind him with the goal wide open.

As the game moved into the second half, there were early chances for both sides with Abdulqadir Adam seeing his shot brilliantly saved by the legs of Ahli keeper Yazan Husein, before Al Ahli Meshaal saw his header from a narrow angle just miss the target.

The game’s defining moment did eventually come in the 68th when Meshaal was on hand to pounce on defensive mix-up between the rival keeper and a defender. The ball fell to the much-experienced striker who swept home from close.

The win took Al Ahli to eight points prior to their next match against Al Kharaitiyat. Al Markhiya remained on five points and will hope to get more from Round 9  against Al Arabi.
