QNB Stars League Week 17 — Al Markhiya 1 Al Khor 1

Bottom-half teams Al Markhiya and Al Khor played out a 1-1 draw in Week 17 of the QNB Stars League at the Al Arabi Stadium on Saturday.

Mohammed Salah El Neel put Al Markhiya ahead as early as the sixth minute. Al Khor replied through Salem Hilal in the 65th.

Both sides, coming off a defeat, earned a valuable point in their fight to stay in the top flight. Al Markhiya have nine points and Al Khor 15.

El Neel scored off a cross from the left by captain Anas Mubarak. Al Markhiya had more of the ball as the early goal gave them confidence.

Brazilian attacking midfielder Madson was yet again the livewire among the Al Khor ranks.

Al Khor were more alert in the second session and came close to equalising, but Madson’s shot was sent out by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Bakri on the hour mark.

They were soon rewarded and the goal, scored by Salem Hilal following a rebound from Al Bakri who blocked Castan Silva’s shot, resulted from a Madson cross from the right.

Al Khor continued to be on the front foot, while Al Markhiya coach Adel Sellimi, in his first match in charge after replacing Yousef Adam, tried to sharpen their attack by introducing Saleh Badr Al Yazidi and Leonardo de Souza.

Al Markhiya had a chance to collect full points at the fag end of the game. However, De Souza failed to connect a cross by El Neel.

Al Khor forced eight corners and Al Markhiya nil.
