QNB Stars League Week 20 — Al Sailiya 0 Al Gharafa 3
Al Gharafa stayed fourth in the QNB Stars League standings with a clinical 3-0 victory over Al Sailiya in Week 20 at the Al Ahli Stadium on Friday.
Attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder had a hand in all goals. He scored in the 25th and 90th minutes, and set up Mehdi Taremi in 44th.
Al Gharafa moved to 32 points with their ninth victory, while Al Sailiya stayed on 25.
Al Sailiya, desperate for a win and to end an unimpressive run of late, had slightly more of the ball in the first half, but it was The Cheetahs who took a two-goal lead going into the half-time break.
Sneijder found the target capitalising on a blunder by Al Sailiya goalkeeper Hassan Idriss. The Dutch star shot into an open goal after latching on to a through pass when Idriss left his charge and rushed out even as the defence fell flat.
After Al Sailiya’s Uzbek spearhead Temurkhuja Abdukholiqov missed a chance, Sneijder tested Idriss with a long-range shot, which the latter parried.
Close to half-time Sneijder set the stage for their second goal with a defence-splitting pass and Taremi was on hand to score.
Al Sailiya continued to enjoy more possession in the second session by knitting their moves along the middle, but it was Al Gharafa who were on the offensive.
Wagner Ribeiro came on as a substitute for Temurkhuja after one hour and his long-range shot in the 76th was blocked by Al Gharafa goalkeeper Qasim Burhan.
After Sneijder had a goal ruled out for offside, he found the mark in the final moments as well.
