QNB Stars League Week 9 Match Report — Al Markhiya 1 Al Arabi 1

A late equaliser from Abdulqadir secured a deserved point for Al Markhiya against Al Arabi in Week 9 of the QNB Stars League at the Al Arabi Stadium on Friday.

Al Arabi’s goal had come against the run of play at the start of the second half, but it was a sublime finish from Abdulqadir that rescued the point for The Oryxes.

The first half was a fairly tepid affair, with the play largely being dominated by Al Markhiya who enjoyed several half-chances, most notably from set pieces. The best chance came through Alain Traore in the 21st minute when his free-kick from just outside the area swung agonisingly wide.

Not long after, there was a moment of controversy as Abdulqadir latched onto a defence-splitting pass. However, his right-footed effort into the far corner was ruled out as he was adjudged to have been offside.

The sides had gone level at the break, but it was Al Arabi, who grabbed the initiative early in the second half. Khalfan Ibrahim found himself clear on the byline and his pull-back into the area was met by Ahmed Khalfan to sweep home from 10 yards. The Dream Team did have a chance to double their lead in the 66th minute, but Yusef’s shot was saved by the onrushing keeper.

While Al Markhiya had always looked like the most threatening side, it took a moment of magic to unlock the opposition backline. A long ball from midfield was played over the top to Abdulqadir  who plucked it out of the air with his chest before volleying first time into the far corner of the net with incredible composure.

Both teams pressed forward after that, but were unable to find a late winner and the game ended 1-1.
