QSL Cup Round 4 — Group B Match Reports
Al Rayyan prevailed over Umm Salal 1-0 while Al Arabi were thoroughly tested by Al Sadd before winning 5-4. In Sunday’s other Round 4 Group B action in the QSL Cup, Al Markhiya held Al Ahli to a goalless draw. Al Rayyan thus stormed into the semifinals with 12 points and an all-win record with one round of matches to spare.
Al Rayyan 1 Umm Salal 0
Al Rayyan beat Umm Salal after a battling contest at the Al Arabi Stadium. It was Al Rayyan’s fourth consecutive win after Abderrazaq Hamdallah struck the only goal in the 80th minute.
In the 10th, star striker Rodrigo Tabata attempted a bicycle shot, but Umm Salal goalkeeper Basel Zaidan tipped the ball over the crossbar. Three minutes on, Umm Salal’s Rami Fayez launched a fierce left-footed shot, but the ball was stopped by Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mubarak Al Khater.
Soon after resumption of play, Umm Salal’s Mubarak Al Beraik was booked for a rough tackle on Mohsine Moutouali of Al Rayyan.
As the match progressed goalless with Al Rayyan enjoying more ball possession, Hamdallah just about managed to flick one from close range following a long ball from the midfield. Two minutes later, Adil Rehaili of Umm Salal was booked for a second time and ordered off the pitch.
Al Arabi 5 Al Sadd 4
The fans barely settled into their seats at the Al Ahli Stadium when Al Arabi found the net as early as the second minute through a quick-footed drive by Yousef Ahmed.
Al Sadd equalised three minutes later through Jugurtha Hamroun, who easily beat Al Arabi goalkeeper Mahmoud Zarayi.
Al Sadd took the lead in the 14th following a neat 1-2 between Yasser Abubaakar and Rami Suhail, with the latter finding the net.
Three minutes later, Al Arabi converted an indirect corner kick into their second goal as Tarek Hamed Abdelmagid produced a deft left-footed drive that sailed above the head of Al Sadd goalkeeper Jehad Hudib.
Al Sadd surged into lead one more time as Hatem Kamal fired in one in the 29th after an indirect free-kick. But four minutes later, Al Arabi drew parity through Yousef’s second goal.
Mohammed Atif (71st) and Hamroun again (76th) scored for Al Arabi and Al Sadd respectively before Hamad Ismail came up with the winner in the 81st.
Al Markhiya 0 Al Ahli 0
Al Ahli and Al Markhiya played out a goalless draw at the Al Wakrah Stadium. It was the second draw for both teams.
After the sides failed to construct meaningful moves, Al Markhiya nearly pulled off a goal in the 60th. However, striker Abdulqadir Ilyas, lurking inside the box, failed to convert a relatively-easy close-range opportunity.
Al Markhiya dominated the stat-sheet by earning seven corners against three by Al Ahli and were marginally better in ball possession (51 per cent).
